RocGrowth Candids is a bi-monthly event featuring regional entrepreneurs who share their personal stories and the lessons they’ve learned building successful businesses. We also feature innovative leaders who impact our community’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
RIT and UR are critical contributors to the region’s innovation economy and are recognized globally as leaders in higher education and research. Attend this event to obtain unusual access…and promote greater connections between those institutions and our community.
On Wednesday, May 8th, we will feature Julia Maddox, Director of iZone, and Jim Hall, Dean of University Studies Division and Executive Director of the School of Individualized Study. iZone is UR’s new collaborative work space located in their main library, fostering creative problem solving and design thinking. RIT’s SOIS supports students who embrace an innovative and self-guided pathway to their education, aiming to embrace all of the institutions abundant resources.
Our guests will be interviewed by Alex Zapesochny, publisher of the Rochester Beacon. We start and finish with informal kibitzing over drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

RIT’s MAGIC Spell Studios is a new 52,000 square foot facility that opened in October 2018 but has existed as a commercial production studio that has been developing and publishing digital media since 2013. The facility features a 7,000-square-foot state-of-the-art sound stage, professional sound mixing and color correction theaters, labs and production facilities. The 180-seat theater is the first of its kind in western New York, featuring 4K laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound.
In addition to supporting the academic and research missions of the university, MAGIC Spell Studios is also built to support and incubate entrepreneurial activities in western New York, encouraging students and faculty to start their own studios to help grow the digital media landscape in the region.
